About the Organization
Nationally, the YWCA started in 1858 in New York City. Fifty-four years later, in 1912, Grand Island opened its first YWCA. From its beginning as a Christian organization, the YWCA has fought for women's rights. Through the years it has grown to be an organization that welcomes all religions and individuals who wish to not only fight for women's rights but also take a stand to end racism. We fight to eliminate racism and empower women through our mission framework focused on 3 areas: racial justice, economic enhancement of women, and the health and safety of women and girls. In our Racial Justice focus, we are actively involved in Civic Engagement. This includes not only voter registration, but issue education, and voter participation. We also participate in Stand Against Racism every year to encourage everyone to pledge to not only speak out against racism but be aware of their own implicit biases. In our economic empowerment focus, we provide access to affordable and quality childcare through our Child Development Center. Currently, 20% of our children receive child care subsidies and 35% are eligible for free and reduced lunch.
