Central City Public Library

About the Organization

The Central City Library was organized in 1882, with contributions of books by generous citizens. A room was fitted in the old city hall, over the firetruck house. In 1906, the library was moved to the YMCA building, where it was located for 23 years.

In 1929, the library changed to Hards Memorial Library, when a facility was built with funds donated in memory of Ebenezer Hards' name.

In 1991, the Hards Memorial Library was demolished, and replaced with the existing facility (Central City Public Library). The current facility is handicapped accessible, and is approximately 7,500 sq. feet in size.

In 2023 CCPL underwent a significant, building-wide interior renovation. This renovation provided our building with better accessibility and comfort for people of all ages - with furniture that can be easily reconfigured to accommodate gatherings of any size.

Our library has received a star rating in each of the last fifteen editions of America's Star Libraries of the Library Journal Index of Public Library Service.
